We Share More Than Dance: Meet Dance Volunteer Alexis Alcala

We’re excited to shine a volunteer spotlight on Alexis Alcala, who has been volunteering in our dance program for three semesters. Alexis (on the far left in the photo below) is passionate about dance, faith, and kids, so she jumped at the opportunity to merge all three of those passions.

I love that this program provides opportunities for the girls to build strong friendships,” says Alexis. “Students, staff, and volunteers are a close-knit dance family. We share more than dance—we get to share our lives with each other!”

Alexis has bonded with one student in particular. While connecting with this dancer over the course of the semester, Alexis found out that she loves Squishy toys: cute, malleable creatures of all shapes, sizes, colors, and scents that are popular in schools nowadays. So she decided to gift this student with one of these plush toys at the end-of-semester showcase. Although this was a small gift, it was meaningful to the student and to Alexis because it showed that they knew one another’s likes and dislikes, that they had developed a special relationship. This one-on-one attention let the dancer know that she is valued as an individual and that each of her particularities is important. For young people, that knowledge can be transformational.

I’ve seen these dance classes change lives because BJM knows the importance of community,” says Alexis. “Dance is a God-given gift meant for sharing with others, so volunteering with BJM brings me so much joy.”

Being able to do what you’re passionate about and serving others while doing it is what we’re all about here at BJM. We love Alexis, and we love that she’s found that sense of belonging here.

What are you passionate about? If your passions include dance and mentorship, consider joining our dance volunteer family! Our next volunteer training is January 18. Get your ticket here.
