More Than Movement: How Dance Helped Jhenifer Find Her Voice

At Because Justice Matters, we often say that dance is about more than technique.

It’s about transformation.

Jhenifer, one of our Senior Tribe Dance Team Members, is living proof of that.

When she first joined our dance program, like many of the girls we serve, she carried things she didn’t always have words for – emotions, experiences, and questions about who she was and where she belonged.

But over time, something began to shift.

“Dance has changed the way I see myself,” she shared. “If I can’t express myself through words, I can do it through dance.”

For Jhenifer, dance became more than movement; it became a liberating language.

A way to process.
A way to be seen.
A way to tell the truth about what she was feeling.

She remembers a specific moment during a spring performance when everything clicked. The piece was centered on identity and the reminder that we are not alone and the truth that God is with us, even in our battles.

“I feel like it opened my mind more,” she said. “To understand that I’m not alone and I have someone with me.”

That moment didn’t just stay on the stage. It carried into her life.

Over the course of the season, Jhenifer describes becoming more open, more confident, and more connected to God.

“It’s helped me not hide who I am anymore,” she said. “It’s helped me express what I really feel. It’s time to be seen and known.”

This is the deeper work of BJM’s dance program.

Yes, girls are learning technique.
Yes, they are growing in discipline and skill.

But they are also:

  • discovering their identity

  • building confidence

  • processing real-life experiences

  • developing social and emotional skills, like resilience, self-awareness, and communication

  • learning how to be part of a healthy, supportive community

  • encountering God in personal ways

  • learning that their voice matters

For many of our girls, especially those navigating complex family dynamics or personal challenges, dance becomes a safe and powerful outlet. Our studios are a place where what’s inside finally has space to come out.

“Through dance, you can express your emotions,” Jhenifer said. “Just through movement, you can say a lot when you don’t have the words.

It tells a story.

And for Jhenifer, that story is still unfolding. It’s a story of growth, healing, faith in God, and confidence.

This is why we invest in long-term, consistent spaces for girls to grow.

Because when a girl finds her voice, everything begins to change.

And we are experiencing it happen right here in the heart of San Francisco.

One dancer at a time.
