Jenny gladly accepted our gift bag and began to openly speak about her life. She moved to San Francisco for better pay and to be with her boyfriend of seven years. Apparently after the move he hadbecome violent and tomorrow Jenny would try to get a restraining order filed against him. The conversation progressed and Jenny began to share about how she brought her Bible to the club everyday and was beginning to read from the Psalms. "Have you ever read Psalm 27?" I asked. As I began to quote the Psalm I could see Jenny taking it all in with wide eyes. She looked at me and immediately connected that this was her life right now, fearful but wanting God's protection. Before I could offer to pray her break was over and she quickly had to say goodbye and get back to work.
A week later we went back but there was no sign of my new friend. Desperately I asked for God to speak through the Psalm that was shared. The following week I had a glimpse of Jenny standing outside for her smoke break. Rushing across the street I reached the club just in time. With bright eyes and a huge hug she shared with me about reading Psalm 27 and asked when we could meet for coffee to talk more. My heart was full of hope for Jenny andI quoted the ancient words, "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear!".
